09 May Nevada’s Future Scholars Shine Bright
Hear ye, hear ye! Recently, the RMHC Northern Nevada Scholarship Program hosted our annual Scholarship Award Ceremony. We’re honored to announce we were able to reward 39 high school seniors from northern Nevada scholarships in the amount of $1,000, which is renewable for a total of four years. Student applications were reviewed by three separate judges on three criteria: financial need, academic achievement and community involvement. We went live on Facebook with a few recipients and learned about what this scholarship means for their attainment of secondary education.
We chatted with Araceli Salazar Marquez, Roberto Hernandez and Janet Camillo Caballero at the scholarship ceremony just before they received their scholarship certificates. Araceli and Roberto will both be attending the University of Nevada, Reno and Janet will be attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
“[This scholarship] grants us the opportunity to accomplish higher education and pursue our dream careers,” said Janet.
All three students will be first generation students, the first in their families to attend college. Araceli believes that the scholarship will help ease the financial burden because it’s renewable for three years for a total of $4,000.
“All the aspects of college are really expensive, not just tuition, but textbooks too, and this is really going to help me take away that burden,” she said.
Roberto agreed that the scholarship will help ensure they have access to the classes that they need to succeed.
Janet believes that while the scholarship is beneficial to her attainment of education, being rewarded by the charity is a reward of itself.
“The changes that are made in the community by [the charity] are really impactful, so it’s really good to be a part of that and be rewarded by them,” she said.
The support that Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada receives from the community is what makes it possible to honor the brilliant students that northern Nevada has cultivated. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this scholarship possible and given our students the opportunity to achieve their dream careers.
